An important measure of a university’s greatness can be found in the achievements of its alumni. Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) is nationally and internationally known to develop leaders of note in many fields of endeavor. Many SWOSU alumni have earned distinction through success in their professions and vocations, service to their alma mater, and contributions to their communities. SWOSU established the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame in 1976 to honor outstanding former students and to celebrate their achievements. The Distinguished Alumni recognition is SWOSU’s highest honor and shall be made with uncompromising integrity, ethics, and responsibility to maintain the significance and prestige of the recognition. Purpose and Philosophy The purpose of the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame is to recognize SWOSU alumni who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored SWOSU’s legacy of excellence. The Distinguished Alumni recognition does more than honor its recipients. It also further illustrates the great value of the academic programs and student involvement at SWOSU and increases the pride all former students, students, staff and faculty have for SWOSU. The Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame recognizes those men and women who demonstrate the power of the SWOSU experience to the people of Oklahoma, the nation, and the world. Criteria for Selection Former students are nominated to be inducted into the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. Recipients may be noted for their work in the following three distinct areas but other areas may also be included: - Career Distinction: The recipient is recognized as outstanding or exceptional within his or her career, field or industry, with endeavors that form a record of accomplishment impressive to the citizens of Oklahoma andthe nation. This distinction is reflective of SWOSU’s core values – Excellence, Integrity, Leadership, Loyalty,Respect and Selfless Service.
- Service to Society: The recipient exhibits integrity and a demonstrated commitment to service through an interest in bettering the lives of others through volunteer efforts.
- Service and Support to SWOSU: The recipient’s deeds and actions reflect the importance of his or her educational training, pride in alma mater and loyalty to SWOSU, as demonstrated through their interest in andsupport of SWOSU.
- The Distinguished Alumni Selection Committee shall be coordinated by the SWOSU Office of the President or the President’s assignee. Requisite nomination materials shall be provided to inquiring individuals upon request by the SWOSU Office of the President or the President’s assignee; said materials shall also be made available via a public notice issued to give reasonable time for nominations to be submitted.
- In addition to submission of a basic nomination intake form nominators shall be encouraged by the SWOSU Office of the President or the President’s assignee to provide supporting items that further distinguish the nominee. Such items may include, but shall not be limited to:
- Current biography or curriculum vitae for the nominee
- Up to three letters of support from non-family members that specifically address the nomination
- Newspaper and magazine articles detailing the nominee’s accomplishments
- Personal stories related to the nominee
- Award or certificates of achievement related to the nominee
- Other items of interest
- Nomination forms will be held for each individual for a period of three years. If a nominee is
- No limitation shall be placed on the total number of nominations accepted for consideration.
Eligible Nominees Individuals must have earned a degree from SWOSU to be eligible for nomination to the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. SWOSU graduates employed by SWOSU are not eligible for nomination during their term of employment at SWOSU. SWOSU graduates may be nominated posthumously. Method of Nomination Nominations to the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame shall be accepted using the following guidelines: - The Distinguished Alumni Selection Committee shall be coordinated by the SWOSU Office of the President or the President’s assignee. Requisite nomination materials shall be provided to inquiring individuals upon request by the SWOSU Office of the President or the President’s assignee; said materials shall also be made available via a public notice issued to give reasonable time for nominations to be submitted.

- Nomination forms will be held for each individual for a period of three years. If a nominee is not selected for induction, his or her nomination materials may be updated and renewed by the original or other appropriate nominator for consideration in any subsequent years of the three year period.
No limitation shall be placed on the total number of nominations accepted for consideration. The Distinguished Alumni Selection Committee The Distinguished Alumni Selection Committee will be chaired and appointed by the sitting SWOSU President in consultation with former SWOSU Presidents, the SWOSU Executive Councilors, the SWOSU Foundation, Inc. Trustees, the SWOSU Alumni Association Directors, and the SWOSU emeriti community
